Charles Hervé

HERVE Charles

For the last few years, Hervé Charles has been photographing clouds in close-up, from an aeroplane. His negatives are then reproduced onto large glass surfaces, often circular ones. Enlarged and made up of two juxtaposed films, the picture becomes difficult to interpret and the work sometimes gives the impression that it has been drawn. This impression brings to mind how much the pictorial questions, namely those which kindle the problem of representation, remain present in the work of Hervé Charles. Sometimes, it is snow, ice or lava which serve his photographic thoughts made real by means of black and white or coloured negatives.

At another level, a "pantheistic" fascination with natural materials is felt peeping through with him. As if the natural elements linked with the water contained a fragment, tiny but sufficient, of the heavenly Order of the world, of its secret writing. A "spiritual" preoccupation which still enriches this remarkable oeuvre.

Born in Nivelles (Belgium), on 6th November 1965.
